The designing of domestic spaces is a deeply intimate experience, but what is the political-economy of the everyday in which these intimacies are formed? More so, how are these experiences engineered in an unfamiliar metropolis for migrant women?

My current project “Now That I am Here/This My Home” attempts to retell lived narratives of women in and around Khirki village navigating spaces and roles as outsiders in a city. They are home-makers who are also entrusted with earning a livelihood for their families. Space is an unaffordable luxury! Families of four live in a crowded single-room apartment. Yet these homes are organized with careful thought keeping in mind both the utilitarian and aesthetic value.

These spaces are an insight not only into the material histories of the women inhabiting but their relationship with the metropolis at large and their hopes and aspirations. Despite the unwieldy raggedness, there is a delicate sense of temporality. Womanhood at large finds congruence with my medium. It is relentlessly folded, stitched, beaten, cut, and managed, yet it never breaks!
