Praveen Kumar

  • Biography

Born in 1971 in Mangalore, Praveen Kumar completed his Bachelors in Fine Arts (Painting) from DMS, Mysore and then went on to do a Masters in Visual Arts (Painting) from Jain University, Bangalore. He has been getting a lot of attention recently for his work and is considered a rising star in the Indian contemporary art circles. He is best known for his abstract cityscapes.

Praveen Kumar’s style is distinct – his cityscapes are meditative, composed of enigmatic architectural forms. Using a mix of mediums such as oil, acrylics, pen and ink, and even charcoal, his paintings depict urban landscapes in geometric configurations, that are rich in colour and movement. For the artist, cities, with their own sighs, noise, chaos and chatter, are metaphors for the human condition.

The artist has been a part of numerous solo shows and group exhibitions both in India and across the world. He has also received many awards and has been recognized for his work. Awards include the Leela Puraskar Indore (2014), the Sa-Mudra-Nirman-Puraskar (2012) and the Lalit Kala Akademi, Karnataka State Award (2008).
