Born in West Bengal, Nilanjan studied at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, followed by a Masters in Printmaking at the same university.

Nilanjan’s works are a result of his research on gender interactions and intimacy in Indian public spaces. He has examined public spaces in cities and peri-urban areas and carefully collects images of scribbles of declarations of love, something that for the couple becomes a private space.

He questions the social disciplinary measures placed against any form of physical intimacy of couples and lovers in public. He photographs benches in public places and reimagines them with the social disciplinary designs with superstructures that are not opaque nor solid. These superstructures are the metaphoric representation of the deeply entrenched taboos and traditions within society that still define social conduct in public spaces in India.
