Jit Chowdhury

Born in 1988 in Kolkata, Jit graduated in Visual Communication from the Design Institute of India, M.P., in 2013. His series The Shape of Absence explores space, memory, and the emotional residue of his maternal grandparents’ former home in Bhowanipore—demolished over a decade ago yet still vividly present in recollection.
Using natural indigo on Nepali rice paper, he maps what is no longer visible, employing positive and negative space to question what remains after disappearance. Architectural yet emotive lines echo shadows, voices, and rituals from his childhood. The works reflect on the weight of memory, the void left by the vanished home, and the silent presence of neighboring houses that now stand around its absence, tracing how memory expands even within an erased space.
