Asif Imran is a visual artist originally from the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, now based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. His artistic practice revolves around exploring the landscapes of various regions through photographic and image-based experiments, emphasizing their social, structural, economic, and cultural dimensions. In his recent project, Mapping Time and Terrain, developed during the JSW Foundation Artist Programme at Hampi Art Labs (HAL), he delved into the rich historical and cultural landscape of Hampi.

This project blends traditional and contemporary visual narratives, aiming to highlight the mythological significance of the region while fostering a deeper emotional connection with the audience. By integrating Hampi’s landscapes into his work, he documented its cultural, historical, and mythological dimensions, drawing inspiration from the symbolic motifs and traditional designs of Hampi and Vijayanagara. This approach allowed him to create a visual narrative that connects Hampi’s past with its contemporary relevance.

The transformative period of the residency advanced his artistic practice by encouraging the fusion of traditional and modern techniques. It also emphasized the importance of medium-based exploration and community engagement, enabling him to interact with the local environment and its people.
