From Devotion to Depletion
This work emerges from my ongoing engagement with the visual language of Pichwai painting and the devotional world of Krishna Leela, where nature is not merely a background but a sacred presence. In traditional Pichwai imagery, Krishna’s leelas unfold amidst lush forests, rivers, animals, and cosmic harmony, reflecting a worldview where humans and nature exist in balance. In this work, I reinterpret that devotional landscape through a contemporary lens. Instead of harmony, I present a fractured environment where human activity has led to the depletion of natural resources. The burning structures in the upper section symbolize the destructive consequences of unchecked development and consumption. What was once sacred and nurturing is now threatened by the very hands that once worshipped it. At the lower section of the work, I introduce five figures representing the Panchtatva — the five fundamental elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements are the essence from which all life is formed. Here, they appear as silent witnesses, observing the crisis created by human actions. Their presence reflects a moment of shock and contemplation, questioning how devotion toward nature gradually transformed into exploitation. The intricate paper-cut surface echoes the ornamental and narrative qualities of Pichwai, yet it also resembles fragile ecological systems that can easily collapse under pressure. Through this work, I attempt to bridge devotional imagery with contemporary ecological concerns. My practice began with an interest in depicting Krishna Leela through traditional inspirations, but it is gradually evolving toward questioning the present condition of our relationship with nature. The title “From Devotion to Depletion” reflects this transition — from reverence for nature to its relentless consumption. The work asks a simple but urgent question: if nature has always sustained us, what have we truly given back to it?
